Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a leader of the Impressionists—and in fact, the movement was named after one of his paintings, called Impression: Sunrise.

Monet took his paints and canvases into the field to paint directly from nature. He wanted to capture the momentary effects of color and light in his paintings. He created several series of paintings, in which he painted the same subject (a cathedral, haystacks, etc.) many times to capture the effects of sunlight and the seasons.

Monet frequently painted out of doors and was particularly interested in the effects of light and colour. He often painted the same scenes at different times of the day or the year, like his series of paintings of Haystacks or of Rouen Cathedral. His most famous works remain those of his garden at Giverney, especially the pictures of the waterlillies in the ponds there. Most of Monet's work in painted with oil paint on canvass. This gives the pictures a rich texture both visually and physically.
