Art Deco Costume & Fashion
The dresses that flappers wore to cocktail parties tended to be of similar designs to one another. They usually had low neck lines, and were slim fitting on the upper body. The waist line was slung low, and often had a sash or bow around it. The bottoms of the dresses were normally pleated and very loose fitting, to allow women the freedom to move their legs to the crazy Jazz beat.
The designs that were drawn at the time, also reflect the simple flat shapes of colour that were used in the graphics and advertising of the period. Note also the greyhound, whose slender lines and curves became something of a fashion accessory in themselves.
These are the type of shoes that would be worn to dance in during the 'Roaring Twenties', and a flapper was never without her handbag!
Scull caps were not just worn when out driving new sporty racing cars. They were an absolute fashion must and were usually covered in beads or sequins. Notice the typical colours of red, black and cream, and the zig-zags and diamond patterns.
