Zoo Activity Part 1

Learning Objectives:

  • to produce a spreadsheet using labels, data and formulae.
  • to investigate the effect of changing data in a spreadsheet

Task 1: Setting up the Zoo Spreadsheet

  1. Start Excel by clicking its icon or using [Start] then Programs .
  2. Copy the above information into a spreadsheet.

Try to 'format' your spreadsheet exactly as you see it in the picture.

If you need help, have a look at Spreadsheet Techniques

Task 2: Add Formulae to your spreadsheet

  1. Enter formulae into column D to calculate the total cost per week for each of the animals.
  2. Do this in the following way.
  3. Click into cell D2. Press = (equals) to start the formula.  Use the cursor keys to move to cell B2. Press * (the asterisk- the symbol for 'times'). Use the cursor keys to move to cell C2. Press [Enter].
  4. Do the same for each animal.
  5. Do you think that there may be a quicker way to repeat this.  Try it out!
  6. Click into cell D11.  Use Autosum to add up the costs of all of the animals. For help, look at Spreadsheet Techniques .
  7. Click into cell D13.  Press = (equals) to start the formula and then subtract the allowed cost (£1000) from the actual cost in a similar way to 3 above.  This will show whether too much has been spent.

Task 3: Print out your spreadsheet

  1. Put your name in cell A14 .
  2. Print your spreadsheet in Landscape.

Task 4:  Investigate changes to your spreadsheet

  1. Change the number of lions to 15 .
  2. Check to see which other information has changed
  3. Print your spreadsheet again and mark the changes on it.

Extension

  1. Try changing other pieces of data in order to see what happens.

Homework

  1. When you used 'Autosum' it set up a function called 'sum' which added up the list of numbers. Find out about some other functions like 'sum'.
