Spreadsheets and Modelling
Zoo Activity Part 1
Learning Objectives:
- to produce a spreadsheet using labels, data and formulae.
- to investigate the effect of changing data in a spreadsheet
Task 1: Setting up the Zoo Spreadsheet

- Start Excel by clicking its icon or using [Start] then Programs .
- Copy the above information into a spreadsheet.
Try to 'format' your spreadsheet exactly as you see it in the picture.
If you need help, have a look at Spreadsheet Techniques
Task 2: Add Formulae to your spreadsheet
- Enter formulae into column D to calculate the total cost per week for each of the animals.
- Do this in the following way.
- Click into cell D2. Press = (equals) to start the formula. Use the cursor keys to move to cell B2. Press * (the asterisk- the symbol for 'times'). Use the cursor keys to move to cell C2. Press [Enter].
- Do the same for each animal.
- Do you think that there may be a quicker way to repeat this. Try it out!
- Click into cell D11. Use Autosum to add up the costs of all of the animals. For help, look at Spreadsheet Techniques .
- Click into cell D13. Press = (equals) to start the formula and then subtract the allowed cost (£1000) from the actual cost in a similar way to 3 above. This will show whether too much has been spent.
Task 3: Print out your spreadsheet
- Put your name in cell A14 .
- Print your spreadsheet in Landscape.
Task 4: Investigate changes to your spreadsheet
- Change the number of lions to 15 .
- Check to see which other information has changed
- Print your spreadsheet again and mark the changes on it.
Extension
- Try changing other pieces of data in order to see what happens.
Homework
- When you used 'Autosum' it set up a function called 'sum' which added up the list of numbers. Find out about some other functions like 'sum'.
